WHAT FACTORS AFFECT THE COST OF GRAVE CLEANING?

Discover the biggest factors that impact grave cleaning costs in the UK. Includes price ranges, stone types, restoration work and what professionals do.

If you’ve started researching grave cleaning prices, you may have noticed a wide range of costs — from as little as £45 for a light clean to £1000+ for a full restoration. This variation is normal. Every grave site and memorial is unique, and the level of work required will vary dramatically depending on the stone, age, condition, location and surrounding environment.

For this reason, at Lovely Graves, we don’t have a fixed price list, but use a transparent pricing approach based on:
£30/hour labour + materials & overheads (building materials, cleaning materials, insurance, travel, cemetery fees etc).

Below, I’ve broken down the 7 biggest factors that influence the cost of grave cleaning so you can understand exactly what you're paying for — and why.

1. The Condition of the Grave

This is the single most important factor in determining the price of grave cleaning. A grave that is less than 5 years old, and has been regularly maintained would generally just need a 1hr ‘light clean’ or maintenance service. Whereas a grave that has not been maintained for 20+ years, has sunken and has several cracks in it is going to need a lot more work.

Light Clean (from £45)

Ideal for memorials in good condition and recently maintained. This includes 1hr on site at the grave, with before and after pictures. The service typically includes:

  • Debris removal (leaves, litter, any dead plants)
  • Weed pulling of immediate area surrounding headstone / plot
  • Non-chemical clean of headstone, ornaments and edging stones*
  • Flowers / bedding tidy
  • Noting any signs of ware that need attention (i.e. leaning headstones, missing / chipped lettering)
  • Optional flower / ornament / occasion markers (birthday balloons / memorial wreaths) placement and arranging

*using a non-abrasive cleaner and nylon brushheads to preserve the integrity of the stone

Deep Clean or Full Restoration (From £120–£500+)

Around 70% of the work we do is deep cleaning or full restoration of graves that haven’t been tended to for 5+ years. For the reasons in this post, the range of pricing can vary dramatically. Though for an example, looking at the picture shown above - these usually require a minimum of two visits, around 3 hours each, and can include:

  • Specialist stone treatments for the removal of algae, lichen & black spot
  • Letter repainting or regilding
  • Re-levelling sunken headstones
  • Repairing damaged headstones, kerbs or ornaments
  • Treating heavy staining & environmental damage
  • Adding a stone sealant to protect the restored headstone
  • Groundworks including laying turf, grass seed and levelling plots

Older graves that have not been cleaned for years often require multiple rounds of treatment, increasing the overall labour time. For works like this, where possible we will do a visit to the site before providing a quote to ensure we have an accurate understanding of the current condition, not only of the stonework, but the ground and any additional challenges such as access and tree roots that cross over the site.

After a full restoration / deep clean we recommend a regular maintenance plan, typically a ‘light clean’ every six months for our clients to ensure that the grave stays in good condition.

2. Size & Complexity of the Memorial

Larger or more intricate graves are lovely for us to work on, but naturally take longer to clean and restore. Examples include:

  • Full kerbed graves
  • Large family plots
  • Multi-tiered stones
  • Tombstones
  • Character Headstones
  • Graves with additional edging, vases, ornaments or planted areas

Even simple details — like deep carving or decorative lettering — can increase labour time, as they require meticulous, careful cleaning.

3. Stone Type Is One of the Biggest Cost Drivers

Different stones react differently to algae, mould, lichens, pollution and weathering — and require different cleaning methods and products.

Harder stones (cheaper to clean):

  • Granite
  • Slate

Low porosity → dirt, algae, and lichen sit on the surface instead of soaking in.
Tough material → can tolerate firmer brushing and more effective (still non-acidic) cleaners.
Faster job → usually a straightforward wash, rinse, and light scrub.
Lower risk → minimal chance of damage if cleaned correctly.

Softer stones (more expensive to clean safely):

  • Sandstone
  • Limestone
  • White marble

Highly porous → absorbs moisture, pollution, and biological growth deep into the stone.
Very soft → aggressive cleaning can permanently erode lettering and edges.
Slower process → often needs biocide dwell time, repeated gentle passes, and longer drying.
Higher risk → mistakes can cause irreversible damage, so work must be cautious and skilled.

We do a lot of soft stone headstone cleaning restoration, which requires highly controlled cleaning using premium, non-abrasive chemicals. The softer the stone, the more time and expertise required — which increases cost.

4. Overgrowth, Ground Conditions & Additional Restoration Work

When a grave has been left untouched for several years, it may require substantial prep work:

  • Digging out overgrowth
  • Cutting back roots or moss
  • Lifting and resetting kerbs
  • Straightening leaning stones
  • Removing compacted debris or soil

Seasonal impact (important for pricing):

  • Frozen ground (Nov–March) makes levelling and turfing impossible.
  • Shorter daylight hours reduce available working time.
  • Groundwork is best after rainfall, when soil is soft.

If the restoration requires work that can't safely be completed in winter, this may add cost or delay.

5. Location, Travel & Cemetery Access Rules

Although we cover the entire North West and include travel in our pricing, certain conditions may increase cost:

  • Restricted cemetery opening hours
  • Limited parking / difficult-to-access plots (smaller church grounds where you can’t get your vehicle close to the plot, can mean additional time needed to carry equipment to and from)
  • Access to running water / waste bins
  • Councils charging additional fees for alterations

Additionally certain regions in the UK are just more expensive to operate, for comparison, London grave cleaning prices are typically 20–30% higher than the North West due to increased living costs.

6. Materials, Chemicals & Professional Standards

Professional grave cleaning uses products that have been tried and tested for the specific application of cleaning and restoring graves are better, and of course more expensive, than publicly available off the shelf cleaners. In our work we use:

  • Specialist, stone-safe chemicals - specific to the stone type
  • Algae & lichen treatments
  • Non-abrasive brushes
  • High-quality, speciality coatings and paints, specifically formulated for memorial masonry applications
  • Approved cemetery-safe products
  • Protective equipment for the team, the stonework and surrounding areas

These materials cost significantly more than household cleaners — and for good reason.
Bleach-based products can permanently damage stone and cause cracking, fading and erosion. Using professional-grade materials protects both the memorial and its long-term value.

Many families try to clean grave stones themselves — but without the right techniques and chemicals, it’s easy to cause:

  • Permanent stone erosion
  • Damage to lettering
  • Colour staining
  • Structural instability

Cemeteries also have strict rules about what can be used on site, and what and how items such as memorials are added. In many cases, we are called to repair damage caused by well-intentioned DIY cleaning and restoration.

Hiring professionals protects both the stone and your peace of mind, and will save you both time and money in the long-run.

7. Additional Services That Add Value

Unique to our service Lovely Graves includes premium extras, as standard that most families really appreciate:

  • Edited timelapse video of the restoration work
  • Before & after photos
  • Option of a video call whilst at the grave site
  • Guarantee on all works completed
  • Free no commitment quotations
  • Written summary of work completed

We also offer a range of optional add-ons, such as grave decorations, for an additional fee including:

  • Fresh flowers from £18
  • Christmas wreaths from £45
  • Poppy wreaths from £75
  • Solar Lighting from £40
  • Personalised ornamental plynths / memorials from £45

These small touches don’t dramatically change the overall cost but do increase the value families receive.

How Much Will Your Grave Cleaning Cost?

Hopefully this post has given some context to all of the considerations that affect the price of grave cleaning and restoration. So the short answer is, if you’re wondering how much grave cleaning will cost - just ask. As every grave is unique, so is every quote we provide. Photo assessment is often enough to provide a quote — though where possible, for larger or older memorials, and where time allows an in-person visit is preferred and ensures accuracy.

Please note that as part of our commitment to supporting those in the UK who do, and have done, the meaningful work to support our country we offer a 10% discount for military veterans & Blue Light card holders. Please let us know when enquiring so we can add the discount to your quote.
